Such Charming Liars is a YA mystery novel by Karen M. McManus, the author of One Of Us Is Lying. This book is mostly geared toward middle and high-school students, with the protagonists being within that age range.
The book follows 16 year old Kat Quinn, and her 17 year old ex-step brother Liam Rooney. Kat grew up as a jewel thief, and both she and her mother worked for a woman named Gem. When her mom decides to take one last job at a fancy party before finding another career, Kat finds a way to stow along. Her mom then becomes severely sick, leaving Kat to finish the job by herself. Of course this is made all the more difficult by Liam.
Liam grew up with his biological mother. Until she dies. He was then sent to live with his abusive father, who would catfish women on dating sites with the sob story of his five year old son who has cancer, all of which was a lie. But when his father meets a woman and tells her actual facts about their lives, they get invited to a party hosted by the woman's rich family.
When the two ex-step siblings meet after 12 years of no contact, they realize that they had unconsciously bonded over a traumatic event that had occurred when they were still step siblings.
They realize quickly after a death occurs on the property, that they themselves are in danger, and they have to clean up the mistakes that their parents have made.
The plot twists in this book are impeccable and the writing style is amazing. I personally loved that the mystery wasn’t entirely centered around a murder mystery, but that was part of it. This book is full of surprises, and the characters were lovable, and amazing. The characters never gave up, despite having been pulled from their normal lives, and I loved that about them.
This book is definitely one of my favorite books ever, and 100% my favorite stand-alone book. I loved every second of it, from the moment I opened the book, and finished the book in one weekend. My copy of the book is without a doubt one of my most treasured possessions.
The perfect mixture of mystery, action, and romance makes this perfect for many YA readers, and the thrill of the story is sure to be loved by most. I can’t tell you what your taste in books is, but I can tell you that this book was amazing!
