U-Can Food Drive '22 Begins!

On November 21st, the U-Can Food Drive starts. Every November, Fremont staff and students have donated food to the people in need of it. It is one of our ways to give back to our community. One of the longest teaching teachers at Fremont Middle School, Mr. Hoque and one of our newer ones, Mr. Hendry, run the food drive with the Leadership class. Recently, I got the opportunity to have a chat about the history of the food drive and why we do it with Mr. Hoque.

I asked him the important question first, how do I donate to it? “You give your cans to your first period. You can donate dry food but they prefer only cans. If you don’t have cans, you can just donate money. Every twenty-five cents is the equivalent of a can.”

Next I asked him why we do the food drive every year. “Everyone needs food to live a healthy life; especially kids. Kids are starving and need the food we give to live. A lot of the people who rely on it are the kids that go to Fremont. It’s our way to give back to the community.” I followed that with asking him how long we’ve been doing it and why we started. He said, “Mrs. Grauer started “Stuff the Bus” in 2001. Eventually, Honor Society took it over in 2010. They renamed it to U-Can Food Drive and it has been that since.

I ended it by asking him what he liked about it. “I think it’s one of the greatest things we do at Fremont because so many kids get involved. It’s one of those nice things that we do for our community. It’s great since we get nothing out of it but the kids in need get the food they deserve!”

If you have any further questions, feel free to visit Mr. Hoque (Rm 20) or Mr. Hendry (Rm 25). Feel more free to donate through the 21st of November and the 14th of December. Have a superb Thanksgiving and General Up!
